Dubai Car Rental Requirements for Tourists: Everything You Need to Know in 2026

By Taite Luxury Car Rental | Updated 2026

Dubai is one of the easiest cities in the world for tourists to rent a car. The roads are excellent, signage is clear and in English, and the process is straightforward. However, there are specific requirements you need to meet before getting behind the wheel. This guide covers everything you need to know.

Required Documents for Tourists

To rent a car in Dubai as a tourist, you need a valid driving licence from your home country. If your licence is not in English or Arabic, an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended. You also need a valid passport and a valid UAE tourist visa (or visa-on-arrival stamp). Visitors from GCC countries (Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar) can use their national driving licence directly. European visitors — your EU driving licences are accepted in Dubai. French, German, British, Dutch, Italian, and Spanish licences all work without an IDP, though carrying one is always advisable.

Age Requirements

Minimum age requirements vary by vehicle category. Most standard and luxury cars require a minimum age of 21. Performance vehicles like AMG models, BMW M cars, and premium SUVs typically require 23 years old. Supercars (Ferrari, Lamborghini, McLaren) and ultra-luxury vehicles (Rolls Royce, Bentley) generally require 25 years old with at least two years of driving experience. At Taite, we clearly communicate the age requirement for each vehicle when you enquire.

Dubai Driving Rules Every Tourist Should Know

Drive on the right side of the road. Speed limits are enforced by radar cameras — fines are issued automatically and are typically AED 300-1,000 depending on the excess. The blood alcohol limit is zero — absolutely no drinking and driving. Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Mobile phone use while driving is prohibited unless using hands-free. Speed limits vary: 60-80 km/h in urban areas, 100-120 km/h on major highways, and 140 km/h on some sections of the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway. Lane discipline is important — the left lane on highways is for overtaking only.

Salik Tolls

Dubai uses the Salik toll system — automatic toll gates on major roads that charge AED 4 per pass. Rental cars are equipped with Salik tags, and the charges are typically billed to you after the rental. There are currently several Salik gates across Dubai, and you will pass through them on Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Maktoum Bridge, and other key routes. Plan for approximately AED 16-32 per day in Salik charges depending on your routes.

Insurance

Standard comprehensive insurance is included in all Taite rentals. This covers third-party liability and damage to the vehicle subject to an excess. Premium insurance options with reduced or zero excess are available at additional cost and are recommended for high-value supercars. Always check what your travel insurance or credit card covers — some premium credit cards include rental car insurance as a benefit.

Fuel

Fuel in Dubai is significantly cheaper than in Europe or the US. As of 2026, petrol costs approximately AED 3.0-3.5 per litre. Most luxury and performance cars require Super (98 octane) petrol. Cars are typically delivered with a full tank and should be returned with a full tank.
